What You'll Catch

Striped Bass

The island's most prized game fish. Season runs May through October, with peak action in June and September-October. Surf casting at dawn and dusk produces the best results.

Bluefish

Aggressive fighters that arrive in late May and stay through fall. Schools of "blues" create explosive feeding frenzies visible from shore.

Bonito & False Albacore

Late summer (August-October) brings these fast, powerful fish. Light tackle anglers' favorites - "albies" are known for blistering runs.

Scallops (Recreational)

Nantucket's famous bay scallops open for recreational harvesting in October. A unique experience - wade the shallows with mask and rake.

Shore Fishing Spots

  • Great Point - The island's best surf fishing (4WD required)
  • Surfside Beach - Accessible, good for beginners
  • Smith's Point - Remote, excellent fall fishing
  • Eel Point - Scenic, good at tide changes
  • Jetties Beach - Cast from the rocks
  • Madaket - West end access

Charter Fishing

For the full experience, hire a local captain who knows the waters:

  • Half-day trips (4 hours): $600-900
  • Full-day trips (8 hours): $1,000-1,500
  • Equipment and tackle included
  • Inshore (stripers, blues) or offshore (tuna) options

Book well in advance for peak season. Captains provide everything - just bring sunscreen, snacks, and seasickness meds if needed.

Tackle Shops

  • Bill Fisher Tackle - New Lane, comprehensive selection
  • Cross Rip Outfitters - Gear and local knowledge

Both shops offer advice on current conditions and what's working. Don't be shy - locals are generally happy to share tips.
