Whaling Museum

World-class museum of Nantucket's whaling heritage

The Nantucket Whaling Museum is one of the finest maritime museums in the world. Housed in a restored 1847 candle factory, it tells the remarkable story of how this small island became the whaling capital of the world. The centerpiece - a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling - is just the beginning.

What You'll See

The Whale Skeleton

The museum's most dramatic exhibit is a complete 46-foot sperm whale skeleton suspended in the main gallery. The whale, a young female, washed ashore on Nantucket in 1998 and was painstakingly prepared for display.
