Accessibility Guide

Resources for visitors with mobility needs

Nantucket's historic character - cobblestone streets, old buildings, and sandy beaches - can present challenges for visitors with mobility needs. However, with planning, the island can be enjoyed by everyone. Here's what you need to know.

Getting to Nantucket

Steamship Authority Ferry

Both the fast ferry and traditional ferry are wheelchair accessible with ramps and accessible restrooms. Call ahead to ensure space on the accessible deck and for any special assistance.

  • Phone: (508) 477-8600
  • Request accessible boarding assistance when booking

Flying

Nantucket Memorial Airport is small but accessible. Airlines can arrange wheelchair assistance between gates and aircraft.

Getting Around

NRTA Shuttle Buses

All NRTA buses are wheelchair accessible with lifts. The shuttle system serves downtown, beaches, and outlying areas.

  • Phone: (508) 228-7025
  • No advance reservation needed

Taxis

Several taxi companies have accessible vehicles. Call ahead to arrange:

  • Lisa's Cab: (508) 228-2233
  • Roger's Taxi: (508) 228-5779

Downtown

The cobblestone Main Street is challenging for wheelchairs. Many shops have steps. The brick sidewalks on Federal Street and some side streets are easier to navigate.

Accessible Beaches

Jetties Beach (Most Accessible)

The most accessible beach on the island. Features include:

  • Beach wheelchair available for loan (first-come basis)
  • Accessible restrooms
  • Paved path close to the sand
  • NRTA shuttle accessible

Other Beaches

Most other beaches have sandy or shell parking lots and no paved access to the beach itself. Surfside and Cisco have accessible parking spots but no beach wheelchairs.

Accommodations

Larger hotels typically have ADA-compliant rooms:

  • White Elephant: Accessible rooms available
  • Nantucket Hotel: ADA rooms and accessible common areas
  • The Wauwinet: Limited accessibility - call ahead

Many historic inns and B&Bs have stairs and no elevators. Always call ahead to discuss your specific needs.

Restaurants

Many downtown restaurants are in historic buildings with steps. Restaurants with step-free access include:

  • Jetties Beach Restaurant
  • Many restaurants on the wharves
  • Cisco Brewers (outdoor, level ground)

Call ahead to confirm accessibility and request seating accommodations.

Accessibility Tips

  • Reserve the beach wheelchair at Jetties early in the day
  • Avoid cobblestones - use side streets where possible
  • Call restaurants before arriving to confirm access
  • The NRTA is your best transportation option
  • Book accessible accommodations well in advance
  • Bring mobility equipment - rentals are limited
